TV: HBO, BoxNation (UK)

This Saturday night from the world-famous Madison Square Garden in New York, HBO World Championship Boxing presents a big light heavyweight doubleheader, with plenty on the line for all four fighters.

In the main event, Sergey Kovalev (31-2-1, 27 KO) takes on Igor Mikhalkin (21-1, 9 KO) for Kovalev’s WBO 175-pound title. Kovalev was dominant in his last bout in November, following a pair of controversial losses to Andre Ward in 2016-17. Mikhalkin is a big underdog, but this is the opportunity he’s worked for since turning pro in 2007.

The co-feature is arguably the better fight, where Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10 KO) will take on Sullivan Barrera (21-1, 14 KO) for Bivol’s WBA “world” title, with the winner seemingly likely to face Kovalev later this year, should Kovalev be victorious later in the evening. Bivol is a rising star in the division, but Barrera is a legitimate top contender on a good roll, and a big step up in competition for Bivol, too.

In the main event, Sergey Kovalev (31-2-1, 27 KO) defends his WBO 175-pound title against Igor Mikhalkin (21-1, 9 KO). Kovalev came in at 174.6 pounds, with Mikhalkin at a trim 172.6, well under the limit, which is the lowest recorded weight of Mikhalkin’s 10-and-a-half-year pro career.

The co-feature pits WBA “world” titleholder Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10 KO) against top contender Sullivan Barrera (21-1, 14 KO). Bivol tipped the scales at 174.4, with Barrera at 173.6, which is what he weighed in his win over Joe Smith Jr last May, so the relatively low weight is no big surprise for him.

The show starts at 10:05 pm ET on HBO, and Bad Left Hook will have live round-by-round coverage for both fights at that time.

Ufc 222 Kovalev Vs, Mikhalkin: Live

Tonight at 10:05 pm ET on HBO, it’s a world title doubleheader at 175 pounds, with Sergey Kovalev returning in the main event to face Igor Mikhalkin.

We’ll have live coverage of both fights.

Kovalev (31-2-1, 27 KO) came back last November to scorch Vyacheslav Shabranskyy and win the vacant WBO light heavyweight title, which he’d previously lost to Andre Ward. That win snapped a two-fight losing streak for Kovalev, who looked as monstrous as ever. Mikhalkin (21-1, 9 KO) is a fellow Russian and someone Kovalev considers a friend, but this is the opportunity of a lifetime for the underdog, as he’s said this week.

In the co-feature, it’s another 175-pound matchup, this one arguably the real main event for hardcore fight fans. Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10 KO), a rising star in the division and holder of the WBA “world” title, will face top contender Sullivan Barrera (21-1, 14 KO). If Kovalev wins, a fight with the winner of this matchup would be big for HBO later this year.
